Every now and then it happens that some claims handler somewhere inside Unum does something that actually helps insureds. It’s during these rare moments that I make a special effort to recognize the king of mean caught in an unusual act of kindness.
Just recently, one of my clients received a very compassionate letter from a Unum claims handler giving regards when both of her parents passed away. Given the tone of Unum’s usual letters, this one was extremely well written and as heartfelt as a corporation can possibly get.
I’ve learned that Unum’s ability to do the right thing is, of course, dependent on the claims handler’s attitude. Coincidentally, I also came in contact with a Unum Offset Coordinator, as nasty as they get. Still, we’re all very grateful, when Unum’s representatives put aside the “A” personality aspects of their characters and show emotions that help insureds manage tragedy that sometimes happens in their lives.
We are extremely grateful to Unum’s claims handler who was extremely compassionate to an insured who really needed a break.
